Private William Crocker enlisted into the 8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, who were sent to Norway in April 1940 in bid to halt the German invasion. They landed April 18 as part of an Allied Force of 38,000. The Foresters travelled to Domabas and Lilliehammer, where they split into two. Two Coys came under pressure and were able to hold their position. Surrounded, the Foresters were ordered to withdraw to Tretten.
On April 23, the Battle of Tretten began. After a long battle, they were forced to surrender. Some managed to escape and made it back to the UK, those who remained were captured as Prisoners. This included Private Crocker, who was held in different camps, known as Staglags. We know that Private Crocker was repatriated but passed away aged 26 on Wednesday 21 1945.
