Medal Information

Corporal Charlie Spence
1625
The Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derbys

2nd Battalion

Charlie was a native of Nottinghamshire and enlisted into the regiment in the mid 1870’s. He was posted to the 2nd Battalion and was first stationed in Ireland, before shipping out in January 1882 to Gibraltar, where he would be stationed until August of the same year.

This was at the point that the British and French governments had signed a dual note, assuring the Khedive (Viceroy) of Egypt that they would come to the aid and defence of the country following the rise of rebellions and internal threats. This would be the start of the Egypt Campaign of 1882-1889.

Charlie and the 2nd Battalion sailed and arrived at Alexandria in Egypt on the 31st of August, in order to help build up the defences in and around the city; they would continue to serve throughout the campaign.

Charlie was discharged from the regiment on the 7th August 1885.
