1st Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment
Major Philip was born on the 6th September 1874. He served with the 1st Battalion in the South African War of 1899-1902 and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant of the Sherwood Foresters on the 9th December 1896. He was promoted to Lieutenant on the 11th March 1898, and Captain on the 4th January 1901. He was severely wounded at Moedwil on the 30th September 1901 after being shot in the right leg and mentioned in Dispatches twice.
Phillip retired on the 18th November 1911 but later rejoined from the Reserve of Officers to serve in the Great War. After landing in France on the 16th September 1914, he joined the 2nd Battalion on the 9th October 1914 at Compaigne. On the 30th July 1915, he joined the 1st Battalion with a Draft. On the 15th November 1915, he became Staff Captain to the 61st Brigade and later promoted to Major on the 8th August 1916. He sadly died in 1956.
