Charles was born 1911 in Ontario, Canda. His father, Henry, was originally from Stapleford, Nottinghamshire then moved to Eyria, Ohio in 1908. In 1910 he was living in Ontario, Canada with his wife, Annie. By 1916 his family had relocated to Stapleford. 

Charles enlisted 26th July 1940. Not much is known about his military career. From his medals we know that he served overseas likely along the Western Front.  

He was discharged to Z Reserve 5th March 1946.
