Corporal Joseph Barnes
19407
The Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derbys

10th Battalion

The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment

Joseph Barnes enlisted into the 10th (Service) Battalion and left for France on the 29th December 1915.

He was later admitted to the 51st Field Ambulance Hospital with Bunions to his right foot. On the 17th June 1916 he was transferred to the South Midland Casualty Clearing Station (CCS) at Resmenil Farm.

CCS’s were generally located on or near railway lines, to facilitate movement of casualties from the battlefield and on to the hospitals. Although they were quite large, the stations moved quite frequently, especially after the German offensives.
After his recovery he was posted from the Sherwood Foresters to the Labour Corps and was finally discharged on the 7th March 1919.

The museum holds his 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
