Sergeant Donald Harold Birkett was from Nottingham and lived at Arnold. He enlisted on the 16th of March 1940. 

He served with the Battalion in Tunisia, North Africa, where they were sent as part of the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division of the 1st Army. Donald also served with the Battalion at Anzio in Italy, where they moved to in 1943 and went on to fight up the length of the country. 

According to records he was posted or attached to the Initial Recruitment and Training Plan. 

He transferred to The Essex Regiment on the 19th of February 1945.
