Medal Information

Colonel Herbert Carter O.B.E.
The Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derbys

1st Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment

Colonel Carter was commissioned into the Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant with 2nd Battalion in March 1915 and he would serve with them with distinction, in France, during the Great War. It is recorded that he was wounded twice and was Mentioned in Despatches on one occasion, throughout the conflict.

In the latter years of the war Herbert was transferred to the Kings African Rifles, where he partook in the Somaliland Campaign of 1920. The expedition was against Dervish forces and resulted in a British victory effectively ending 20 years of resistance in the region. Herbert would be awarded the Africa General Service Medal with the Somaliland 1920 clasp for his service during the campaign.

Hebert returned to the Sherwood Foresters in January 1923 as a Captain in 1st Battalion. He stayed in this position for ten years before retiring in October 1933.

Following the outbreak of the Second World War Herbert was called up from the Reserve of officers and was posted to the Ordnance Depot Chilwell, Nottingham, where he held the rank of Captain. He would go on to be promoted to Major and then took a position as Temp Lieutenant Colonel.

After the war Herbert continued his work in the Regiment and in 1948 became the Garrison Commander at Chilwell with the rank of Colonel.
