Sergeant William Chart enlisted into the 1st Battalion on the 23rd December 1914 and served with “C” Coy. He disembarked for France on the 17th December 1914 and was hospitalised on the 20th March 1915 and released on the 30th March 1915.  

On the 3rd June 1915, he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, the London Gazette reads: ‘For gallant conduct  at Neuve Chapelle on night of 19th-20th February 1915, in laying a breastwork across a road under heavy rifle fire. On more than one occasion Sergeant Chart has voluntarily carried out dangerous work under fire. He has set a fine example and proved himself a good leader.’ 

He later served with the 3rd Battalion in “H” Coy. He enlisted for S.R and was awarded Medical Grade C3. He later transferred to Labour Corps with new number 214437 as a Corporal. He was disembodied on the 17th September 1917
