Horace Frank “Hippy” Coleman was born on the 10th May 1900 in Clifton, Bristol.  

In 1919, he enlisted and won the sword of Honour at Sandhurst as a 2nd Lieutenant of the 1st Battalion, The Sherwood Foresters on the 17th of December. He became a Lieutenant, two years later, on the 17th of December 1921. Horace then retired in August 1930. 

Horace would later become a Lieutenant with The Sherwood Foresters throughout the Second World War (1939-45). He joined the Territorial Army in London in 1938 and served as a Gunnery Officer. He was then a Brigade Major of an Anti-Aircraft Brigade. Horace joined the 5th West African Brigade in 1943 and then had a Short Service Commission as Major on the 3rd of January 1945.  

Horace became Deputy Assistant Adjutant General of the Headquarters in Northern Ireland. This was followed by Horace becoming the Officer Commanding the Depot, Derby from 1952-1955, at which time Horace retired. 

He died on the 28th of December 1988 of natural causes.
