Corporal Moses Coverley DCM
19795
The Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derbys

1st Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment

Corporal Moses Coverley lived at Stapleford and enlisted with Notts and Derbys. He served during the Great War of 1914-1918.

He began his service in France on 19th May 1915. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, as reported in the London gazette of the 22nd of October 1917: “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of Battalion stretcher bearers, during the attack on Westhoek Ridge on 31.7.1917. He worked indefatigably and with complete disregard of his own safety, attending wounded men under machine gun and shell fire for several hours. Whilst dressing a badly wounded man in the open a shell burst close beside him, killing the man he was attending to and stunning and burying him. He returned, however, two hours later when slightly recovered, and set a splendid example to the other stretcher bearers of coolness and devotion to duty”.
