Unfortunately, not a lot is known about Sergeant J. S Cuckson except that he was awarded the Volunteer Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. The medal was instituted in 1894 and awarded for 20 years service in the ranks. This medal was superseded by the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal in 1908.

He was another member of the Cuckson family, being related to Major T. M Cuckson, CSM R. F. Cuckson, WO11 A. R Cuckson and Private P Cuckson.

His Volunteer Long Service and Good Conduct Medal is held in the Regimental Museum collection.
