Sergeant David Finch was born in Nottingham and was the son of William and Harriett Finch of 28, Aukland Street, Radford, Nottingham. He had blue eyes and fair hair, and had two sisters and two brothers. On the 6th August 1914, he enlisted under the name Harrington. It is believed that the Finch family were born out of wedlock and so used both names when in civilian life. He married Florence Gertrude Finch. He was a factory hand by trade.  

He served in France between the 11th November 1914 and the 29th February 1916 with the 2nd  Battalion, after which he served at home. On the 3rd May 1915, he was promoted to Sergeant. On the11th April 1916, he joined the 3rd Reserve Training Battalion and served with “L” Company. 

On the 5th August 1916, he returned to France with the 2nd Battalion and served with them in the trenches in the Beaumont Hamel (Right Sector) from the 23rd August 1916. Whilst fighting in the trenches near either Beaumont Hamel or Guillemont, France, David sadly received a gun shot wound to the head. He was nursed by a Mrs Dugdale of Eggington Hall Derbyshire but sadly died from the wounds on the 16th September 1916.
