George was born in 1894 in Skegby in Nottinghamshire and later resided at East Kirkby now Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottingham. He was the son of George and Mary Ellen Garbett and enlisted into the 1/8th Battalion at Sutton in Ashfield in Nottinghamshire with the early number was 954. George embarked for France on the 28th June 1915. He is shown in the Red Cross Enquiry List dated 1st August 1917, as missing on the 23rd April 1917 serving with ‘C’ Coy 11 Platoon. He was reported as killed in action when serving in the trenches near Cite De Riamont, France.
