10th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment
Jack was born 1896 in Darley Dales, a town in Derbyshire. By 19 he was living in Matlock and working for Hall and Co, an agricultural engineering company, as a tinsmith. He enlisted June 1915 and joined the 16th (Chatsworth Rifles) Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire)
The Battalion underwent training at Witley Common in Surrey. Between 13th and 21st December Harry was sick with tonsilitis and could not participate in the activities including the pre-Christmas traditions.
March 6th saw the Battalion crossing the channel to land at Le Havre, France. They underwent a period of training in trench warfare in Estaires before assuming responsibility for the Auchy trenches in April 1916.
The 16th served in various trenches along the front lines. In June 1916 at Richebourg, Jack suffered a gunshot wound to the left knee. The wound was serious enough that he was sent back to England.
He was back with his Battalion by October 1916 as he was shot again this time to his left hand. He returned to England to recover.
24th March 1917 Jack was transferred to the 10th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire). He was appointed Lance Corporal June 1917. They were stationed in trenches on the Black Line, near Arras, France. On 9th July Jack was killed aged 21
