1st Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment
Private Richard Holmes served with The Sherwood Foresters during the Great War of 1914-1918. Richard was born in Sheffield, the son of Herbert and Jane Holmes, but the family had moved to Nottingham by the time of the 1901 census. He enlisted with the 1st Battalion in Nottingham, although we are uncertain of when this was.
At the outbreak of war in 1914, the 1st Battalion were in Bombay, India. They would soon return to England and arrived in Plymouth on the 2nd of October. The Battalion, and Richard, landed at Havre on the 4th of November and became part of the 23rd division. Richard was a part of 1st Battalion’s “C” Company.
Richard and the division moved from Havre to the area Pont Du Hem. Sadly, it was in November 1914 that Richard lost his life at the age of 29.
Richard has no known grave but is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, panel 26 and 27.
His effects and pension were given to his parents.
