Private Patrick Hughes
2033
The Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derbys

2nd Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment

Private Patrick Hughes was born in 1855 in Newtownhamilton, County Armagh.  He enlisted in 1879 at the age of 24 years.  Patrick served with the 2nd Battalion, The Sherwood Foresters and had regimental number 2033.

Patrick saw action in the 2nd Egyptian War. The war began when the British and French Governments assured Tewfik, the Khedive, of their support in the maintenance of order in Egypt as there was rebellion and discontent occurring in the Alexandria region.

Patrick was awarded: the Egypt medal with 2 clasps, the Nile 1884-85 and Tel-El-Kebir and the Khedive Bronze Star.

The Regimental Museum holds his Egypt medal, however this medal with these particular clasps are very rare to the Regiment and to have been awarded them, Patrick was likely to have been attached or transferred to another Regiment, as the 2nd were not serving in Egypt at that time.
