Joseph was born 1874 in Sneinton, Nottinghamshire. He worked as a labourer alongside his father until he enlisted aged 18. He joined The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) on 24th October 1892.  

He served with The Sherwood Foresters for 21 years and 228 days and saw action in India, Egypt and Malta with the 2nd Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire).  

During his time with the Foresters, he worked his way from Private to Colour Sergeant. 

He was discharged June 1914. On the outbreak of the First World War, he re-enlisted in September 1914 with the 11th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire). On 28th September 1914 he was promoted to Sergeant Major.  

 Joseph was severally wounded in trenches at Rue du Quesnoy  when accompanying the General Officer Commanding 70th Brigade and Officer Commanding the  Battalion round the trenches. He was shot in the chest on 5th February 1916. 

He died of his wounds 8th February. The war diaries record his death: 

“…died from the wound received 5th inst. His death is a very great loss to the Battalion, a straightforward loyal and gallant soldier, who upheld all the best traditions of the Sherwood Foresters, in which he had served, with only a short break before this war was declared, for nearly 23 years. His loss is deplored by every officer, N.C.O and man in the Battalion.” 

He was mentioned in the London Gazette for his gallant and distinguished conduct in the field.
