Private Samuel Hunt
4670
The Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derbys

2nd Battalion The Sherwood Forsters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment

Private Samuel Hunt served with the 2nd Battalion of The Sherwood Foresters. His regimental number was 4670.

Samuel served in the Tirah Campaign in 1897-98. The beginning of the trouble in Northwest India began in June 1897 with what was known as the ‘Maizar Outrage’. This was an attack on British Officers who were part of an escort of a political prisoner; three were killed, three wounded and another forty-eight were casualties. The unrest increased after the initial attempt to deter risings in the area. It would not be until mid-September that the 2nd Battalion would be selected as part of operations in the Northwest and join the Tirah Expeditionary Force.

He then went on to serve in the Second Boer War (1899-1902), with the 2nd Malta Company 9th Battalion of Mounted Infantry. The Malta Mounted Infantry consisted of many men of the 2nd Battalion, as they had been ordered to form the mounted infantry school on the island. When the Mounted Infantry left Malta, with men of the 2nd Battalion amongst them, they were christened ‘Malta Mounted Infantry’ in Cape Town by the Pay Office as there had been a confusion with the authorities for assuming they were Maltese.

Samuel was discharged on the termination of his first period of engagement on the 18th of May 1906. He lived at 40 Peekers Hill Road, Sutton, St Helens, Lancashire.
