Company Sergeant Major William Hunt was born on the 11th April 1893 and was the son of Mr and Mrs H Hunt of 25, Bramley Place, Angel Row, Nottingham. He enlisted into the 3rd Battalion in 1911 and in 1912 went to India with the 1st Battalion The Sherwood Foresters. His earlier number was 11373.  

 William embarked for France with the Battalion on the 4th November 1914 and served with “D” Coy and was wounded on the 11th March 1915. He was evacuated on the 13th March 1915 and served in France until 12th March 1915, then served in Gallipoli between the 18th September 1915 to the 27th June 1915. William returned to France on the 28th June 1916. On the 21st October 1917, he was awarded the Military Medal and appears in the London Gazette on the 28th January 1918. He later transferred to the 9th Battalion and served in France until the 27th January 1919.  

 After the War, he rejoined the 3rd Battalion at Great Crosby, Liverpool and later served with the British Food Commission to Austria. Upon returning, he was placed on the staff at Derby Depot and alter returned to India with the 2nd Battalion. On the 17th March 1926, he was awarded a 1st Class Education Certificate with the 2nd Battalion. On the 17th March 1926, he was promoted to Company Sergeant Major. He took part in the Wana Expedition of 1926 and was with “C” Coy.  

 He was discharged on the 3rd March 1929 at his own request with Exemplary character. He was awarded the pension of 40 and a half pence per day for life.
