Tom was born 1896 in Sneinton, Nottingham. He was one of five children and the youngest of two sons. In 1911, he and his brother Harry were working in the printing industry.  

Tom joined the 1st Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment  ‘B’ company 16th February 1915. He served along the Western Front. 

He was wounded 19th June 1915 when the trench was shelled. It is likely that he was evacuated due to his wounds as on 25th October 1915 he was posted to the 9th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters.  

They arrived in France July 1916 and were at the Somme by September. Tom was wounded in September 1916 and succumbed his wounds 26th September. 

The Nottingham Evening Posts records his death: ‘Hutchinson. Died of wounds, September 26th, Private T Hutchinson, Sherwood Foresters. His heart was true, his spirit brave, his resting place a soldier’s grave. From sorrowing mother, father, brother, and sisters.’ 

In August 1916 Tom’s brother, Harry enlisted with the 46th Australian Infantry Battalion. He saw action along the Western Front and was killed April 1918.
