George was born in Netherfield, Nottingham on 24th October 1915 and was the son of John and Florence Marriott.  He enlisted into The Sherwood Foresters at Mansfield on 24th June 1940 at the age of 23 years.  He married Dorothy Margaret. He was posted to the 14th Battalion and went with them to the Middle East taking part in the Liberation of North Africa in 1942 and 1943. 

It was from there that the battalion went on to Italy, where on 12th April 1944, George was sadly Killed in Action, age 28 years, during operations on the Anzio Beach Head, Italy.
