Medal Information

Private John Septimus Mawson
2950

1/8th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment

Private John Septimus Mawson served with The Sherwood Foresters regiment with army number 2950. He would later transfer to the Queens Own Royal West Regiment and change army number to L/ 13605.

Whilst with the Foresters, John served with 1/8th Battalion. Unfortunately, we do not know when he transferred regiment, only that he had transferred by the end of the war, so it is uncertain which battles he took part in.

The 1/8th Battalion landed in France on the 25th of February 1915. The Battalion saw various action including at Sanctuary Wood/Hooge (1915), The Battle of the Somme (1916) and Cite St. Elie (1917). It is likely that John would have been with the Battalion for some of this time.
