Lieutenant Colonel Milward was born on the 22nd September 1881 in Southwell, Nottinghamshire.  He was the son of Leonard and Jessie Milward.  Herbert was commissioned in 1899 and served in the Boer War with the 4th and 1st Battalions.  He was steadily promoted and made a 2nd Lieutenant with the 4th Battalion on the 8th of December 1899 and a 2nd Lieutenant with the 1st Battalion (on the 5th of January 1901), a Lieutenant (on the 12th of September 1904) and was made Captain on the 7th of December 1908. 

He was wounded in 1915 and again in 1917.  He commanded the 17th (Welbeck Rangers) Battalion in 1917, when a Major with the temporary rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  Herbert was awarded a Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for gallantry whilst temporary Lieutenant Colonel which was reported in the London Gazette. Almost a year later he was awarded a bar to his DSO which was further reported (in the London Gazette). He then commanded the 2nd Battalion in March 1918.  His promotion to Lieutenant Colonel came on the 1st of January 1919.  

Herbert retired on the 15th of December 1923 and went to live in Egypt.  During the Second World War he served again, this time in the capacity of the Provost Marshall in Cairo.  

Herbert died on the 17th of May 1967 aged 85 years and is buried at St Mary the Virgin Church, Southwell, Nottinghamshire. 

He is mentioned in the book ‘Joffreys’s War’ by Bourne and Bushaway.
