2nd Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment
Alfred was born in St Annes, Liverpool on the 15th March 1909 but settled in Nottingham and was a Special Constable with the Nottinghamshire Constabulary. He married on the 30th September 1952.
He transferred to the Sherwood Foresters from General Service Corps. Serving with the ‘C’ Company 2nd Battalion he was chosen by the CO as his company runner. His CO Major Sascha Rubens was severely wounded in the knee and Alfred immediately attended to him with a field dressing. Alfred strapped a rile to Major Rubens’ leg as a splint and carried him back to safety on the other side of the railway embankment. Soon after this Alfred was also severely wounded when a shell landed near killing the CSM and wounding the Major Ruben again in the arm and face. After this dreadful experience they remained close friends up to Alfred’s death in 1990. Major Rubens wrote ‘I shall never forget this unique man, awarded the Military Medal for bravery and to whom I owed a debt I could never properly repay’. Alfred died of natural causes on the 12th December 1990 in Nottingham.
He was discharged on the 23rd July 1944. In 1960's was MTO at Bestwood Lodge Arnold, Notts HQ 49 Brigade.
