Joseph served with the regiment during the Crimean War of 1854-56 and was present at multiple battles throughout the war. It is recorded that he fought with the 95th at Alma, Sevastopol and at Balaklava. 

Joseph was awarded the Balaklava clasp, which is of note, as it was very rare to the Regiment. He was also identified on the Balaklava clasp medal roll as being a Warrant Officer at this time. 

For his service, Joesph was awarded: the Crimean Medal with clasps Alma, Balaklava and Sebastopol.
