Private J Seymour
338
95th Derbyshire Regiment of Foot

95th (Derbyshire) Regiment of Foot

Private J Seymour served with the 95th (Derbyshire) Regiment of Foot. He had early regimental number 338.

Private Seymour served during the Sikkim expedition of 1888. The Sikkim expedition was to expel Tibetan forces that had marched in and taken over the state. In 1885-6, trade had tried to be opened up with Tibet via Sikkim, the Tibetans believed their religion and independence was under-threat, which led to this action. The Government of India launched the Sikkim expedition in retaliation, after their ultimatum went unanswered, by the March deadline. However, troops had begun to be sent to the region as early as January.
