Captain Robert Lowe Sherbrooke joined The Sherwood Foresters as 2nd Lieutenant on the 23rd May 1906. He was promoted to Lieutenant on the 30th September 1908 and Temporary Captain on the 21st October 1914. Robert embarked for France with the 1st Battalion on the 4th November 1914 and was wounded on the 22nd November 1914 whilst attempting to rescue wounded officers and men at Richebourg. During the Great War, he was wounded a second time and was mentioned in Dispatches fives times.  

On the 16th December 1914, he was evacuated to England and returned to duty on the 13th March 1915. On the 21st January 1915, Robert was promoted to Captain, on the 1st November 1915, he was promoted to Temporary Major, Brevet Major on the 3rd June 1916, and Temporary Lieutenant Colonel on the same day. Robert commanded the 1st Battalion between the 1st October 1915 to the 26th December 1916. 

He became Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel, Machine Gun Corps on the 27th February 1917 and commanded training the Battalion at Belton Park, Grantham, Lincolnshire.  

On the 26th September 1917, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for action taken on the 31st July 1917 whilst with the 2nd Battalion The Sherwood Foresters. The London Gazette reads: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on Westhoek Ridge on 31.7.1917. Under his skilful handling his Battalion captured and held all its objectives though repeatedly counter-attacked. He visited the position under heavy machine-gun and shell fire, and although slightly gassed before the action he remained with his Battalion throughout. The dash of his men in the attack, and their tenacity in holding heir position, were very largely due to his personal influence and training.’ 

On the 31st December 1925, he was promoted to Major. He became Special Appointment French Military School on the 28th February 1921, Special Appointment Austria on the 1st September 1923, and Assistant Military Attaché Paris on the 1st November 1925. 

On the 12th November 1934, he was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel and went on to command the 1st, 8th, 1st Reserve and 4th Battalions. He sadly died on the 5th July 1958.
