Harry was born in 1896 and lived near Matlock. He enlisted on the 14th of June 1915 and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) which was reported in the London Gazette on the 22nd of October 1917: 

‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in the St Julien Sector between 31st July and 5th August 1917, when in charge of a Lewis gun team.  During an attack on enemy trenches, he had broken both legs and, in this condition, he crawled to a position from which he could fire on the enemy, continuing to do so until the gun was taken away from him and he was evacuated.  His pluck and determination won the admiration of all ranks.’ 

Harry was discharged on the 24th of June 1919 and received the Silver War Badge
