Major General Edmund Davidson Smith was born on the 27th of June 1832 in Calcutta, India.  He embarked with the 95th for the Crimea as an Ensign on the 22nd of April 1853 and was present at the Battle of Alma on the 20th of September 1954.  He was severely wounded in the trenches before Sebastopol on the 17th of October 1854 and was invalided home in December 1854.  He married Mary Matilda Cooke-Collis on the 11th of November 1863 in Cork, Ireland. 

He accompanied the Regiment to India and served throughout the Indian Rebellion.  He rose steadily through the ranks and retired on the 30th of May 1887 as a Major General.  He sadly died on the 8th of September 1916 aged 83 years and is buried in Kensal Green Cemetery, Greater London.
