Private Percy Walter Toder
242617
The Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derbys

2/5th & 1/8th & 2/8th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment

Private Percy Walter Toder was born in 1897 at Newark on Trent. He was the son of John William and Mabel Toder of King Street, Southwell and was one of 13 children.  In the 1911 census he was listed as an errand boy.

Percy enlisted at Newark, Nottingham in November 1914 with the earlier Regimental numbers of 3143 and 20025.  He would move between The Sherwood Foresters Battalions serving with the 2/5th, 1/8th and the 2/8th.

He was sent to Dublin, with the 2/5th and fought in the Irish Rebellion. The Mansfield Chronicle dated the 11th of May 1916 gives a casualty list and shows him as slightly wounded whilst in Ireland.

Percy further served with the 2/5th Battalion in France and landed on the 28th of June 1915. He would transfer Battalions during this time, but it is unknown when which means it is hard to place his service.

Percy was captured by the Germans on the 21st of March 1918 at Bullecourt and was sent to work in a coal mine at Dulmen.  Following the armistice, he left Germany on the 26th of November 1918 on the long march to Holland.

Sadly, he died of pneumonia at Sittard, Limberry, Holland on the 10th of December 1918 and is buried in Nijmegen Protestant Cemetery, Gelderland, Netherlands. He is also commemorated on the memorial at Southwell Minster, Cathedral and parish Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
