Medal Information

Private Ernest Sydney Ulyat
4974127
The Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derbys

1st Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment

Ernest was born on the 11th of December 1917 in Clifton, Nottingham.  He enlisted on the 12th of November 1934. It is recorded in the 1936 Regimental Annual that he was serving with the 1st Battalion and was with “A” Company No 3 Platoon as a Private.  “A” Company was stationed in Jamaica at this time.

Ernest did serve with “A” Company 3 Platoon in 1938 (this is recorded in the Regimental Annual). He was later transferred to the 2nd Battalion and served with them in Guernsey, where they arrived in Spring 1938.

Ernest was then posted, in 1939, to the 1st Battalion and served in Palestine; this is where the 1st Battalion were at the outbreak of the Second World War (1939-45). He would also serve with the Battalion during the war, in Cyprus and North Africa.

The 1st Battalion were captured at Tobruk on the 21st of June 1942 and became prisoners of war. Ernest was not captured and returned to the UK. After his return home, Ernest must have transferred regiments, as he took part in the Normandy Landing in June 1944 (no Foresters battalion took part).

Ernest later married Irene, and they had one son named Sydney Dale Ulyat.  He lived in Clifton, Nottingham. Sadly, Ernest died on the 18th of May 2001 of natural causes.
