Clement was born in April 1898, the son of William and Alice Wootton. The family lived at Birdholme, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, before moving to Brampton, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Clement later moved to Derby Road, Chesterfield to live with his sister, which is where he was at the time of enlisting. Clement was employed as a pony driver at Holmewood Colliery during this time.   

Clement enlisted into The Sherwood Foresters Regiment and served during the Great War (1914-18). He entered France on the 16th of December 1915 and appears to have initially served with the Number 23 Infantry Base Depot, before being transferred to the 11th Battalion, the Sherwood Foresters, on the 25th of February 1916. The 11th Battalion had been in France since August 1915. The Battalion, and presumably Clement, saw action at Ollivers (1st of July 1916) and the Ypres Area (November 1916). 

Sadly, Clement was Killed in Action, aged 19 years, when the Germans attacked Hill 60, in Belgium on the 9th of April 1917.  He is buried in Sanctuary Wood Cemetery, Zillibeke, Belgium, Plot 2, Row K, Grave 3. His personal inscription reads: ‘NOW THE DAY IS OVER THE BATTLE HAS BEEN FOUGHT AND WON’.
