Medal Information

Sergeant William Wright MM
200693
The Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derbys

1/5th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment

Sergeant William Wright was born in 1895 in Melbourne, Derbyshire. He enlisted on the 14th of September 1914 when aged 19 years and 7 months with an earlier regimental number of 2780.

William served in the Great War (1914-18) and landed in France on the 26th of June 1915.  This was a different time to the majority of William’s battalion, the 1/5th, and as such we are unsure of where William saw action. He was reported wounded on the 30th of November 1917.

He was awarded the Military Medal (reported in the London Gazette on the 14th of May 1919), ‘For gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on St Quentin Canal, on the 29th September 1918.’
